How to get dotTrace core logs

dotTrace 6.0 or higher

  • Close all instances of dotTrace and Visual Studio.
  • Find and empty the 'JetLogs' folder ('%Temp%\JetLogs'). 
  • Launch dotTrace, prepare for profiling; in the 'Profile Application' window, press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+F11. 
  • In the 'Expert options' dialog box, select the 'Enable logs' check box. 
  • Click 'Save', then click 'Run'. 
  • Perform all necessary actions that lead to a problem. 
  • Close dotTrace.

Logs are located in the 'JetLogs' folder.


Older versions

  • Close all instances of dotTrace and Visual Studio.
  • Find and empty the 'JetLogs' folder ('%Temp%\JetLogs'). 
  • Launch dotTrace, prepare for profiling; in the 'Profiler Configuration' dialog box, press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+F11.
  • Click 'Expert options' to open the 'Expert Options' dialog box.
  • Select the 'Enable logs' check box in the 'Expert Options' dialog box.
  • Click 'OK', then click 'Run'. 
  • Perform all necessary actions that lead to a problem. 
  • Close dotTrace.

Logs are now located in 'JetLogs' folder.

    I followed these instructions (sent to me by support) and could not get the Expert Options dialogue to show up.  Support finally sent me a video showing how to get it work, and I found the following: it's not enough to have the profiling window open, you ALSO need to have the focus of the application on one of the controls in the far right pane.

     

    For example, click "Remote", then "Local" to move the focus away from the the right pane.  Then click any option in the middle pane (under "Profile Application").  Hit CTRL-Shift-ALT-F11 as many times as you like, but the Expert Dialogue will not appear.

    Now select Standalone in the middle pane and click the "Advanced" checkbox in the right pane, then try CTRL-Shift-ALT-F11, and it shows up as advertised.
